National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University

National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) was officially established on February 1, 2021, through the merger of National Yang-Ming University (hereinafter “Yang-Ming”) and National Chiao Tung University (hereinafter “Chiao Tung”).

Both Yang-Ming and Chiao Tung were among Taiwan’s leading research universities, and their core areas of development were highly complementary. As a pioneer in medical education reform, Yang-Ming has long been dedicated to cultivating outstanding talent in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, life sciences, biomedical engineering, medical humanities, and other advanced research fields. It has built strong foundations in areas such as aging and long-term care, oncology, neuroscience, and medical engineering. Yang-Ming has also maintained a long-standing partnership with Taipei Veterans General Hospital, while its affiliated hospital in Yilan has actively pursued the goal of becoming a medical center.

Chiao Tung, on the other hand, has been a national leader in electronics, information and communications, management, science, and engineering. More than twenty years ago, it set a clear goal of advancing into the biomedical field, including bioinformatics, biomaterials, bioelectronics, and biomedical sciences, with the vision of bridging information and communication technologies with biomedicine and pioneering Taiwan’s biomedical technology industry. In 2018, with donations from one thousand alumni, Chiao Tung completed the construction of the Hsien-Chi Building for Advanced Interdisciplinary Biomedical Engineering, underscoring its commitment to becoming Taiwan’s leading frontier R&D base for biomedical engineering and marking another milestone in BioICT.

Following the merger, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University now comprises nine campuses across five cities and counties, encompassing 20 colleges, 1,400 faculty members, and 20,000 students. The union of these two universities is truly an ideal combination.
