Department of Mechanical Engineering

Founded in 1976, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) stands at the forefront of cultivating professional mechanical engineers, advancing industrial technologies, and empowering strategic national research and development. Our primary teaching domains of design and manufacturing, thermal fluid and energy, solid mechanics, and control systems bring traditional engineering excellence to a rapidly evolving global technological landscape. To foster students’ innovative and interdisciplinary skills, our curriculums actively integrate subjects such as mechatronics, automated production, biomedical engineering, micro/nanoengineering, and smart manufacturing.

As Taiwan solidifies its position as the global hub for semiconductor manufacturing, our department has joined forces with the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to launch a Semiconductor Instrumentation Engineering Credit Program. This program, introduced in 2020, equips students with the theoretical foundation and practical experience to excel in semiconductor careers, while strengthening the nation’s foundation of skilled professionals. To support Taiwan’s burgeoning space industry, our department has also partnered with the Taiwan Space Agency (TASA) and the University System of Taiwan in 2019 to launch the Space Technology and Engineering Credit Program. Subsequently in 2023, the Institute of Space Systems Engineering (iSSE) was established to offer systems engineering education at the graduate level that is essential towards advancing the nation’s space technology frontier.

In addition to a full range of programs that includes bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees, NYCU’s Department of Mechanical Engineering is renowned for hosting the nation’s largest sounding rocket research team and an advanced electronic cooling research group. On average, the department’s 35 faculty members published several dozen international journal articles annually over the past five years while undertaking about ninety research projects that spanned fundamental theories to industrial applications, component development to system integration, and traditional to emerging technologies. These projects were supported by the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC), the National Health Research Institutes (NHRI), the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST), the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), as well as other public and private organizations.

Graduates of the department are highly sought after for their comprehensive expertise in mechanical engineering and interdisciplinary skills. Our alumni’s diverse career paths include university professorships and research at large-scale organizations such as the NCSIST, ITRI, and TASA. In the industry, alumni thrive in sectors such as semiconductors (e.g. TSMC, UMC, MediaTek), computer and consumer electronics manufacturing (e.g. ASUS, Acer, Foxconn, Compal, Quanta, Wistron), and traditional industries (e.g. Taipower, CSC, CTCI, Yulon Motor), showcasing the far-reaching influence of our graduates.

In alignment with the philosophy that mechanical engineering forms the foundation of all manufacturing and production in Taiwan’s economic growth, our department employs an adaptive approach in its curriculum and research. Strategic visions for both are continuously refined to empower positive impacts on national technology advancements and global economic trends. Through this practical roadmap of innovative research, robust industry-academic collaboration, and a commitment to fostering globally-minded engineering professionals, the Department of Mechanical Engineering aims to be a global leader in engineering research and education.
