Department of Biological Science & Technology

Beginning

The Institute of Biological Science and Technology (IBT)was established in 1994 with a master’s degree program, which is the first biotechnology-related academic department at NCTU. At present, the College of Biological Science and Technology is composed of the Department of Biological Science and Technology(DBT), the Institute of Molecular Medicine and Bioengineering, and the Institute of Bioinformatics and Systems Biology.

The biotechnology industry is on the uptick in the 21st century. Many of the world’s major countries with high technology are all committed to assist in the development of their biotechnology industry and cultivate biotechnology talents. Our government has also extensively promoted the development of biotechnology industry and the cultivation of biotechnology talents for the past two decades. From the “Eight Major Technology Development Focus in Taiwan” in 1990, the “Two Trillion and Twin Star Development Program” in 1996, to the establishment of many national biotechnology science parks in the country in recent years, the government has invested a large amount of money annually. It also strongly encourages colleges and universities to participate in the cultivation of a new generation of talents on biotechnology research and development.

In view of this, National Chiao Tung University has proposed biotechnology as the key direction for the future development of the school as early as 1990. NCTU plans to combine the well-developed fields of electronics, informatics, science, engineering, and other related fields of the university to cultivate interdisciplinary biotechnology talents. With the fully integration of the science and research of biology and engineering, NCTU aims to achieve the goal of being a top international university with first-class teaching and research outcomes.

Growth

Features of Development

Combine the fields of molecular biology, biochemistry, informatics, genetic engineering, microelectronics, optoelectronics, mechanics, materials, medicine, electronic engineering, etc.

Focus on the integration of theory and practice in teaching and actively promote the interdisciplinary learning modules

Focus on pioneering research and combine R&D institutes with the industry

Based on the outstanding research performance, to provide students with a high-quality learning environment, cultivate students with interdisciplinary scientific knowledge and leadership skills, and promote students with exchange-studying abroad programs to develop their international outlook.

Future

Status

The Department currently has 41 full-time faculty members dedicated to teaching and research. Every year, more than 90% of research proposals from our faculty are awarded with funds from the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Based on the excellent research outcomes, faculty and students have worked together and participated in various domestic and international academic competitions and received awards for many.

There are 342 undergraduate students, 132 master students, and 38 doctoral students in the department currently. The cumulative number of graduates is more than 2,000.

An extensive alumni system exists where graduates have formed a college alumni association and invited all alumni to give feedback to the department.

Development

The department will keep progressing towards the following goals:

    • To recruit more excellent professionals domestically and overseas to strengthen the faculty lineup of the college
    • To integrate in-house resources of the college and build first-class core laboratories and research centers
    • To take the advantage of excellent research potential of NCTU to develop interdisciplinary biotechnology research
