Department of Photonics (DoP) – NYCU
Photonics is set to play a transformative role as a key technology in the 21st century. Guided by this vision, the Department of Photonics (DoP) at NYCU is dedicated to fostering innovation through forward-looking teaching methods and cutting-edge research programs designed for the new millennium.
NYCU boasts a rich history of academic excellence in photonic science and technology. The university has been a pioneer in numerous groundbreaking photonic advancements in Taiwan, including advanced light sources, nanophotonics, green technologies, biomedical optics, liquid crystals, quantum optics, new imaging and display technologies, fiber communication, silicon photonics, etc.
Department Overview
Established in 2004, the Department of Photonics builds upon the legacy of the Institute of Electro-Optical Engineering (IEO), founded in 1980. The IEO, which offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, was the first institute of its kind in Taiwan and remains a cornerstone for innovative photonic education and research.
Research Focus Areas
The DoP emphasizes three key research domains to equip students with diverse and specialized skills:
- Interdisciplinary Photonic Sciences
- Designed to cultivate students’ ability to conduct cross-disciplinary research.
- Nano and Energy-Oriented Green Photonics
- Focused on advancing cutting-edge research and development in sustainable and energy-efficient photonic technologies.
- Photonic System Technologies
- Encompassing optical communication, information optics, imaging and display technologies, with an emphasis on system integration capabilities.
