Department of Humanities and Social Sciences

   

The educational goals of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences are mainly to increase students’ ability to critical thinking and offer comprehensive training to guide students translating their social concerns into concrete action. The department also provides students with balanced and well-rounded viewpoints by focusing on the importance of both technology and humanities.
We offer basic literacy of humanities and social sciences, including introductory courses in Anthropology, Sociology, History and Literature. In terms of curriculum, it focuses on an issue-oriented teaching structure, cultivates students’ ability to think and solve problems. The fundamental training of the Department leads students to understand Taiwan’s position in global context and also provides a reference framework for students to “self-position.” Therefore, after basic academic training, there is a link between elementary training and advanced application.
The department furnishes freshman and sophomore with discipline of humanities and social sciences. By taking the humanities and social classic readings and interdisciplinary courses, students will equip with the basic knowledge and advance their research ability. They can take various courses based on their personal interests and concerns and launch a project before their graduation.
In addition to Hakka-related courses, the department collaborates with NYCU’s Graduate Institute of Social Research and Cultural Studies, the Institute of Communication Studies, and the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures to provide cross-disciplinary courses. The collaboration enables students to extend their horizon on humanities and subarea of social sciences. Moreover, learning in the classroom with text reading, students will conduct field research to interact with local practitioners. This process helps students to shape their self-identities and foster an appreciation for humanistic values in studying humanities.

To sum up, our curriculum is diverse and balanced: both theory and hands-on experience are equally valued. The department encourages students to conduct field research and participate in national creativity competitions. Such hands-on experience can assist students put humanistic thinking into practice.

The students will possess an interdisciplinary vision, and have a preliminary understanding of contemporary world images and practical experience. The humanities literacy, the perception of social structure, and the theory and practice of social sciences provided by this department, can help students to reflect and innovate in their future careers. It will not only help to achieve their personal goal but also serve the society with their knowledge.
